Stuff to Know
This section offers helpful information about the issues around talking therapy,
such as your emotions and how they impact on different areas of your life and the different kinds of talking therapies.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is unique, ‘un-sticking’ information in the central nervous system by stimulating the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Holding the troubling issue in your mind, you will watch your therapist’s finger move from side to side. As your eyes track the movement, they follow the same course they would take during REM sleep – the same cycle thought to enable the brain’s natural processing of the day.
By helping to unlock negative memories and emotions, the therapy helps the brain successfully reprocess the experience causing the distress. Sometimes music can be employed or tapping therapy.
EMDR can be very effective in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
